A sexually explicit illustrated Book of Genesis by controversial artist Robert Crumb, which features Bible characters having intercourse, has been condemned by religious groups. The book, which is released this month, carries the warning "adult supervision recommended for minors", and is described as "scandalous satire" by its publishers.
It includes graphic illustrations of Bible characters having sexual intercourse, and other scenes depicting naked men and women as well as "gratuitous" depictions of violence. Robert Crumb, the book's author, is most famous for his creation Fritz the Cat, a sexually graphic "underground" comic strip. Frank Lloyd Wright's famed, long-endangered Ennis House, which served as a location for films such as "Blade Runner," is putting out a "for sale" sign with a $15 million asking price, Christie's said on Friday. The 6,000-square-foot Los Angeles estate is being sold by the Ennis House Foundation, which recently completed the initial phase of a stabilization and restoration project after years of decay and damage from earthquakes and torrential rains. In March 2005, it was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's most-endangered list. "Our goal has always been to be a good steward of the house," said the foundation's president, James DeMeo."We've made a lot of progress, but at this point a private owner with the right vision and sufficient resources can better preserve the house than we can as a small nonprofit," he said, explaining the decision to place the historic home on the market.Perched atop a hill in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles just south of Griffith Park, the Mayan-inspired estate built in 1924 from some 27,000 16-inch concrete blocks is one of only four of the legendary American architect's "textile block" homes. Completed in 1924 for Charles and Mabel Ennis, the owners of a men's clothing store who liked to entertain, the house was the last and largest of four homes that Wright designed in an experimental "textile block" style. Mabel Ennis sold the house in 1936, and it has changed hands several times since. Radio personality John Nesbitt, who owned the property from 1940 to 1942, had Wright convert a ground-floor storage space into a billiards room with a fireplace, add a lap pool on the north terrace and install a heating system.The house suffered over the years from neglect. In June 1968, Augustus O. Brown, the last private owner, bought the estate for $119,000 and made extensive repairs. In 1980, he donated the property to a nonprofit trust he established to ensure that the house would be maintained. That group became the Ennis House Foundation. The foundation began its restoration in 2005 after the estate, heavily damaged by rain and the 1994 Northridge earthquake, was placed on "most endangered" lists by both the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the World Monuments Fund. Torrential rains had caused the retaining wall to buckle in March 2005, sending several patterned blocks tumbling down the hill. City inspectors briefly red-tagged the estate, spread on half an acre along a ridge with breathtaking views in the Hollywood Hills. The Maya-inspired estate, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been featured in films including "House on Haunted Hill," "Grand Canyon" and the futuristic "Blade Runner."Jointly offering the house are Hilton & Hyland and Dilbeck Realtors in Los Angeles, with international marketing provided by Christie's Great Estates in Santa Fe, N.M. A new owner would face a projected bill of $5 million to $7 million to return the house to its former grandeur, atop $6.5 million the foundation has already invested to stabilize the property and begin restoration. The listing came about after much soul-searching by the foundation's board, said James DeMeo, president. In 2008, a consulting firm, Cultural + Planning Group of Los Angeles, determined that, given the difficulty of raising funds, the best path was to put the property up for private sale. "Our hope was it would go to an owner with the passion, the vision and the resources to continue the restoration and to preserve this property," DeMeo said.
Inspired by the ruins of Uxmal, Mexico, the striking 6,000-square-foot estate consists of a main house and a smaller chauffeur's quarters, separated by a paved motor court. Wright's notion was to craft an organic structure that literally seemed to rise from the site. David Carradine found dead in Thailand

Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok.
A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He says Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.
The Web site of the newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room and is believed to have committed suicide. [Associated Press]

A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.The worrisome new virus — which combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before — also sickened at least eight people in Texas and California, though there have been no deaths in the U.S.
"We are very, very concerned," World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham said. "We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human ... It's all hands on deck at the moment." The outbreak caused alarm in Mexico, where more than 1,000 people have been sickened. Residents of the capital donned surgical masks and authorities ordered the most sweeping shutdown of public gathering places in a quarter century. President Felipe Calderon met with his Cabinet Friday to coordinate Mexico's response.

The Shiba Inu is the smallest of the six original and distinct breeds of dog from Japan.A small, agile dog that copes very well with mountainous terrain, the Shiba Inu was originally bred for hunting. The word "shiba" usually refers to a type of red shrub. This leads some to believe that the Shiba was named with this in mind, either because the dogs were used to hunt in wild shrubs, or because the most common color of the Shiba Inu is a red color similar to that of the shrubs. However, in old Japanese, the word shiba also had the meaning of "small", thus this might be a reference to the dog's small size.Shiba Inu Males has 14½ inches to 16½ inches at withers and Females has 13½ inches to 15½ inches. The preferred size is the middle of the range for each sex. Average weight at preferred size is approximately 23 pounds for males, 17 pounds for females. The Shiba has an independent nature and can be reserved toward strangers but is loyal and affectionate to those who earn his respect. At times aggressive toward other dogs, the Shiba is always under the control of his handler.

UNESCO and 32 partner institutions will launch the World Digital Library, a web site that features unique cultural materials from libraries and archives from around the world, at UNESCO Headquarters on 21 April. The site will include manuscripts, maps, rare books, films, sound recordings, and prints and photographs. It will provide unrestricted public access, free of charge, to this material.The WDL will function in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, and will include content in a great many other languages. Browse and search features will facilitate cross-cultural and cross-temporal exploration on the site. Descriptions of each item and videos with expert curators speaking about selected items will provide context for users, and are intended to spark curiosity and encourage both students and the general public to learn more about the cultural heritage of all countries. The World Digital Library was developed by a team at the Library of Congress. Technical assistance was provided by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina of Alexandria, Egypt. Institutions contributing content and expertise to the WDL include national libraries and cultural and educational institutions in Brazil, Egypt, China, France, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Mali, Mexico, Morocco, the Netherlands, Qatar, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, Uganda, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In eastern North Dakota, Fargo residents are rushing to build dikes to head off a Red River flood crest of 39 to 41 feet on Friday. The river's flood stage in Fargo is 18 feet. Meanwhile, some south Bismarck residents who live near the Missouri River were forced to evacuate their homes when an ice jam caused unexpected flooding. A demolition team may attempt to break up the ice jam.A major winter storm raised flood fears for Bismarck on the Missouri River on Tuesday, even as communities 200 miles to the east along the Red River fought to hold back rising waters there. Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., called Bismarck "the most urgent threat" in North Dakota because of ice jams north and south of town and heavy snow forecast.
The Army Corps of Engineers cut water releases Tuesday from the Garrison Dam, about 50 miles upriver from Bismarck. The city also ordered the evacuation of homes along the river where access roads were under water in the middle of the spring blizzard. It wasn't immediately clear how many homes. Authorities also transferred 146 inmates from the Missouri River Correctional Center, a medium-security prison along the Missouri River, to the main state penitentiary. Deputy warden Patrick Branson said the river was close enough that officials "felt we had to get all those guys out of there." Numerous workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency are in flood-threatened Fargo — including the agency's acting administrator Nancy Ward.
Ward said she wanted to see the situation firsthand to better understand the challenges. Ward said the New Orleans hurricanes taught FEMA that it must have people on the scene sooner and work with local and state governments to make sure the agency offers the help they need. She complimented local leaders for their organized response to the surging Red River, and noted the spirit of the volunteers filling sandbags. Yvonne Pampellonne is currently being sought out by police after she opened a fraudulent line of credit in order to pay for her cosmetic surgery.This woman never returned for the post op appointments, and it was discovered that she used fraudulent information to pay for the procedure.
Police are accusing Yvonne Pampellonne with using a fake identity to set up a line of credit and rack up $12,000 in cosmetic surgery bills like breast implants. She never showed up for follow up visits. Yvonne Pampellonne is now known as Breast Impant Bandit and is on the run and beigh sought by police.

An Air Force F-22A fighter jet crashed Wednesday near Edwards Air Force Base in California, killing the test pilot, the Air Force said.An F-22A fighter jet similar to this one crashed Wednesday during a test mission in California.The single-seater crashed about 10:30 a.m. for unknown reasons, Air Force officials said.Lockheed Martin said the test pilot, David Cooley, 49, of Palmdale, California, joined the company in 2003 and was a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force.The fighter was on a test mission when it crashed about 35 miles northeast of Edwards AFB, where it was stationed, the Air Force said in a news release. The F-22A Raptor crashed at 10 a.m. about 35 miles northeast of Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert. The Bureau of Land Management identifies the area as Harper Dry Lake, a vast and empty expanse of sometimes marshy flat land.The pilot was David Cooley, 49, a 21-year Air Force veteran who joined Lockheed Martin in 2003, the company said in a statement.
