Frank Lloyd Wright's famed, long-endangered Ennis House, which served as a location for films such as "Blade Runner," is putting out a "for sale" sign with a $15 million asking price, Christie's said on Friday. The 6,000-square-foot Los Angeles estate is being sold by the Ennis House Foundation, which recently completed the initial phase of a stabilization and restoration project after years of decay and damage from earthquakes and torrential rains. In March 2005, it was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's most-endangered list. "Our goal has always been to be a good steward of the house," said the foundation's president, James DeMeo."We've made a lot of progress, but at this point a private owner with the right vision and sufficient resources can better preserve the house than we can as a small nonprofit," he said, explaining the decision to place the historic home on the market.Perched atop a hill in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles just south of Griffith Park, the Mayan-inspired estate built in 1924 from some 27,000 16-inch concrete blocks is one of only four of the legendary American architect's "textile block" homes. Completed in 1924 for Charles and Mabel Ennis, the owners of a men's clothing store who liked to entertain, the house was the last and largest of four homes that Wright designed in an experimental "textile block" style. Mabel Ennis sold the house in 1936, and it has changed hands several times since. Radio personality John Nesbitt, who owned the property from 1940 to 1942, had Wright convert a ground-floor storage space into a billiards room with a fireplace, add a lap pool on the north terrace and install a heating system.The house suffered over the years from neglect. In June 1968, Augustus O. Brown, the last private owner, bought the estate for $119,000 and made extensive repairs. In 1980, he donated the property to a nonprofit trust he established to ensure that the house would be maintained. That group became the Ennis House Foundation. The foundation began its restoration in 2005 after the estate, heavily damaged by rain and the 1994 Northridge earthquake, was placed on "most endangered" lists by both the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the World Monuments Fund. Torrential rains had caused the retaining wall to buckle in March 2005, sending several patterned blocks tumbling down the hill. City inspectors briefly red-tagged the estate, spread on half an acre along a ridge with breathtaking views in the Hollywood Hills. The Maya-inspired estate, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been featured in films including "House on Haunted Hill," "Grand Canyon" and the futuristic "Blade Runner."Jointly offering the house are Hilton & Hyland and Dilbeck Realtors in Los Angeles, with international marketing provided by Christie's Great Estates in Santa Fe, N.M. A new owner would face a projected bill of $5 million to $7 million to return the house to its former grandeur, atop $6.5 million the foundation has already invested to stabilize the property and begin restoration. The listing came about after much soul-searching by the foundation's board, said James DeMeo, president. In 2008, a consulting firm, Cultural + Planning Group of Los Angeles, determined that, given the difficulty of raising funds, the best path was to put the property up for private sale. "Our hope was it would go to an owner with the passion, the vision and the resources to continue the restoration and to preserve this property," DeMeo said.
Inspired by the ruins of Uxmal, Mexico, the striking 6,000-square-foot estate consists of a main house and a smaller chauffeur's quarters, separated by a paved motor court. Wright's notion was to craft an organic structure that literally seemed to rise from the site. David Carradine found dead in Thailand

Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series Kung Fu, who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok.
A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He says Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.
The Web site of the newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room and is believed to have committed suicide. [Associated Press]

A unique strain of swine flu is the suspected killer of dozens of people in Mexico, where authorities closed schools, museums, libraries and theaters in the capital on Friday to try to contain an outbreak that has spurred concerns of a global flu epidemic.The worrisome new virus — which combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans in a way researchers have not seen before — also sickened at least eight people in Texas and California, though there have been no deaths in the U.S.
"We are very, very concerned," World Health Organization spokesman Thomas Abraham said. "We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human ... It's all hands on deck at the moment." The outbreak caused alarm in Mexico, where more than 1,000 people have been sickened. Residents of the capital donned surgical masks and authorities ordered the most sweeping shutdown of public gathering places in a quarter century. President Felipe Calderon met with his Cabinet Friday to coordinate Mexico's response.

The site will include manuscripts, maps, rare books, films, sound recordings, and prints and photographs. It will provide unrestricted public access, free of charge, to this material.The WDL will function in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, and will include content in a great many other languages. Browse and search features will facilitate cross-cultural and cross-temporal exploration on the site. Descriptions of each item and videos with expert curators speaking about selected items will provide context for users, and are intended to spark curiosity and encourage both students and the general public to learn more about the cultural heritage of all countries. The World Digital Library was developed by a team at the Library of Congress. Technical assistance was provided by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina of Alexandria, Egypt. Meanwhile, some south Bismarck residents who live near the Missouri River were forced to evacuate their homes when an ice jam caused unexpected flooding. A demolition team may attempt to break up the ice jam.A major winter storm raised flood fears for Bismarck on the Missouri River on Tuesday, even as communities 200 miles to the east along the Red River fought to hold back rising waters there. Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., called Bismarck "the most urgent threat" in North Dakota because of ice jams north and south of town and heavy snow forecast.
The Army Corps of Engineers cut water releases Tuesday from the Garrison Dam, about 50 miles upriver from Bismarck. The city also ordered the evacuation of homes along the river where access roads were under water in the middle of the spring blizzard. It wasn't immediately clear how many homes. Authorities also transferred 146 inmates from the Missouri River Correctional Center, a medium-security prison along the Missouri River, to the main state penitentiary. Deputy warden Patrick Branson said the river was close enough that officials "felt we had to get all those guys out of there." Ward said she wanted to see the situation firsthand to better understand the challenges. Ward said the New Orleans hurricanes taught FEMA that it must have people on the scene sooner and work with local and state governments to make sure the agency offers the help they need. She complimented local leaders for their organized response to the surging Red River, and noted the spirit of the volunteers filling sandbags. The Irish government ordered the food industry Saturday to recall all domestically-produced pork products because of contamination with cancer-causing dioxin. Ireland exported 368 million euros worth of pigmeat in 2007, half of it to Britain, according to industry body Food and Drink Industry Ireland. "This recall involves retailers, the hospitality sector and the Irish pig processing sector," the government said in a statement. "Preliminary evidence indicates that the contamination problem is likely to have started in September 2008." Ireland had almost 1.5 million pigs as of June, the Central Statistics Office said. Bacon and sausages can be found on most Irish breakfast tables while ham is a traditional food around Christmas. Dioxins are contaminants that may be formed during combustion processes and can be present in industrial wastes, the government said.
Laboratory results of animal feed and pork fat samples obtained on Saturday confirmed the presence of dioxins, it said, with toxins at 80-200 times the safe limits.

Turkey Recipe for Thanksgiving

Turkey Recipe 1
Ingredients:
1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey
For the brine:
1 cup kosher salt
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 gallon vegetable stock
1 tablespoon black peppercorns
1/2 tablespoon allspice berries
1/2 tablespoon candied ginger
1 gallon iced water
For the aromatics:
1 red apple, sliced
1/2 onion, sliced
1 cinnamon stick
1 cup water
4 sprigs rosemary
6 leaves sage
Canola oil

Combine all ingredients, except ice water, in a stockpot, and bring to a boil. Stir to dissolve solids, then remove from heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Combine the brine and ice water in a clean 5-gallon bucket. Place thawed turkey breast side down in brine, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area for 6 hours. Turn turkey over once, half way through brining.A few minutes before roasting, heat oven to 500 degrees. Combine the apple, onion, cinnamon stick, and cup of water in a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 5 minutes.
Remove turkey from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard brine.
Place turkey on roasting rack inside wide, low pan and pat dry with paper towels. Add steeped aromatics to cavity along with rosemary and sage. Tuck back wings and coat whole bird liberally with canola (or other neutral) oil.
Roast on lowest level of the oven at 500 degrees F. for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cover breast with double layer of aluminum foil, insert probe thermometer into thickest part of the breast and return to oven, reducing temperature to 350 degrees F. Set thermometer alarm to 161 degrees. A 14 to 16 pound turkey should require a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours of roasting. Let turkey rest, loosely covered for 15 minutes before carving.

Ingredients:
15 pound turkey
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon each, salt and pepper

Preheat the oven to 325ºF. Remove giblets and neck from turkey. Place them in a large saucepan and set aside. Pat the turkey with paper towels inside and out. Loosely fill the neck cavity with stuffing. Fold the neck skin over stuffing and skewer the skin to the back. Lift the wings and twist them so the tips are under the bird. Stuff the body cavity. Tuck the legs under the band of skin at the tip of the body cavity or tie them with string. Immediately place the turkey, breast side up, on a rack in the roasting pan. If you don't have a rack, butter a few slices of bread on both sides and place them on the roasting pan first. Sit the turkey on top of the bread to keep it from sticking to the pan. In a small bowl, mix together butter, sage and thyme. Rub this mixture over the turkey. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place foil over the turkey so that it points upwards in the middle, making a tent shape. Make sure the foil is dull side up. Leave the sides open.

Roast the turkey at 325ºF, for 4 hours. Baste every 30 minutes to 1 hour. Remove the foil after 4 hours and continue roasting until a meat thermometer inserted into the thigh registers 185ºF and the stuffing reads 165ºF. This will probably take about 1 hour longer. Transfer the turkey to a cutting board. Tent with the foil and let stand for about 20 minutes to let the juices settle before carving. This roast turkey recipe is as close as you can get to no fail turkey cooking.

President-elect Barack Obama named key members of his administration's economic team.
Timothy Geithner, the president of the New York Federal Reserve, will be the next US treasury secretary.

Lawrence Summers, himself a former treasury secretary, will become the new head of the White House's national economic council.

Christina Romer of the National Bureau of Economic Research will chair Mr Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.
Obama also announced Melody Barnes as director of his White House Domestic Policy Council.
Barack Obama said he wanted to create 2.5 million jobs by the end of 2010. He also said he wants the legislation to incorporate his campaign ideas for new jobs in environmentally friendly technologies — the green economy. He added that deficit concerns would have to take a back seat to the goal of reinvigorating the economy.

Boy George chained up and beat escort

Pop star Boy George handcuffed a male escort to the wall and beat him with a metal chain as he tried to flee from a naked photo shoot, a London court heard on Monday.
The singer and disc jockey - being tried under his real name George O'Dowd -- chained up Audun Carlsen on April 28 last year, Snaresbrook Crown Court was told at the start of his trial on assault and false imprisonment charges.
O'Dowd, 47, screamed "w..(explicit)" as he and another man pinned the 29-year-old Norwegian to the floor in his east London home, the court heard.
Carlsen met the singer on the Gaydar website and agreed to visit his house to pose naked for a photo shoot.
They took cocaine together and O'Dowd performed a sex act on Carlsen. The star briefly suspected Carlsen had done something to his laptop but the pair parted on good terms.
However, in the following weeks, O'Dowd sent him a string of emails accusing him of hacking into his computer and also accused the escort of ignoring him, the court heard. [ AFP ]

Culture Club frontman Boy George faces trial on kinky sex charges

Boy George was ordered Thursday to stand trial after a Norwegian man claimed the singer handcuffed him to a bed and threatened him with sex toys. The former Culture Club frontman, whose real name is George O'Dowd, appeared in a London court, charged with false imprisonment.
The aging British pop star posted bail and bolted from the courthouse refusing to answer questions from a horde of reporters. Prosecutor Nicholas Paul shed little light on the allegations, except to say they centered on an event that occurred April 28 in Boy George's east London flat.
The alleged victim, Auden Karlsen, claims he and Boy George met on the Web site Gaydar and he agreed to go to the entertainer's apartment to pose for photos in exchange for about $840.
Karlsen claims the Karma Chameleon singer and an unidentified man changed into sadistic creeps and held him captive.

The race goes along Ben Franklin Parkway onto Arch street and through Chinatown. Other major streets include Columbus Blvd., Chestnut Street, 34th Street, MLK Drive, Kelly Drive, and Main Street. The race passes the National Constitution Center, City Hall, the Philadelphia Zoo, Memorial Hall, the Schuylkill River, and other.
